Set of ten (10) Göteborg chairs produced by Cassina Italy 1980.

Originally designed designed by Erik Gunnar in 1934-1937.

The Göteborg chair represents Erik Gunnar Asplund’s nuanced and distinctly human interpretation of Rationalist principles, in which functional clarity is tempered by warmth and historical awareness. Designed on commission for the extension of the Göteborg Town Hall in the early 20th century, the chair was conceived to harmonize with the building’s intimate, wood-panelled interiors. Its ashwood frame, finely proportioned and tactile in character, echoes the architectural atmosphere for which it was created, reinforcing Asplund’s belief in the close dialogue between furniture and space.

Formally, the chair is defined by a gently curved and slightly convex backrest, a feature that recalls the vocabulary of the Thonet No. 14, referencing early industrial furniture through its clarity of construction and restrained elegance, while avoiding overt historicism.

Condition: The structure of the chairs is very sturdy. The wooden and leather parts have some wear consistent with age and use. The leather of three of the backrests show small repairs at the lower part.

All chairs have a producer stamp and carved serial number.
