Stig Lönngren (Sweden, 1924-2022)
Stig Lönngren (1924–2022) was a highly influential Swedish interior architect and furniture designer renowned for blending master craftsmanship with mid-century modernist principles. Originally trained as a cabinetmaker, he graduated from Stockholm’s Konstfack University in 1951. To combat the era's shift toward cheap mass production, Lönngren co-founded the visionary HI-Group (HI-gruppen) in 1957. This experimental collective united architects and master craftsmen to prioritize high-end, tailored construction and material integrity. He worked with landmark architects like Peter Celsing and produced iconic, clean-lined furniture—such as the HI-65 high-chair and the Pampas chair—which are celebrated today in the Swedish National Museum of Fine Arts.
