Afra & Tobia Scarpa "Africa" dining chairs for Maxalto, black leather, walnut, brass, Italy, circa 1975-1980, set of eight. Very good original condition.

This set of 8 matching chairs is in extraordinary preserved condition with only little wear to wood and leather. It derives from a household of collectors in Veneto and has hardly ever been used. The set is marked and shows a subtle and elegant grain to the hand-finished sculptural back rests. This dominant feature which made the chairs specifically sought-after due to its individual character is very consistent in this set. They were not artificially combined later in date as so many sets offered. Made from solid Italian walnut, and split from one piece to achieve the powerful ambiguity of symmetry and natural wooden characteristics (grain), combined with elegantly curved black leather-upholstered seats it's a real pleasure to look at and sit in. Solid, beautiful and built to last a lifetime.
