Johanna Ulfsak (1987, Talinn), Grid (design 2019), dimensions circa 122″ x 86.6″, weight circa 23kg.
A handmade one-of-a-kind thick 100 knots/cm2 (645 knots per square-inch) rug made from hand-spun silk and wool in Nepal, made to order, production takes approx. 12-16 weeks.
Grid, white grid on black, with folded lines and distortions plays with your eyes and the expectations on flatness and 3- dimensionality.
Designed in 2019 it is not only reflecting on self-referential systems but also on the early history of the rug as a representation of early settlements and therefore even urbanism as such.
Merging the every-day with classical production and modernist rug design, Johanna Ulfsak remains an outstanding figure in the wide scene of new rug designers, often wavering between art and design.
All her designs follow a strict policy of regionality and control over the production.
Each piece is hand-knotted in Nepal with the finest materials and adequate wages.
The dyes are non-toxic and each piece takes between 3-4 month to completion.
Johann Ulfsak (*1987, Tallinn) holds a Master in textile design, her work has been widely shown internationally and she’s part of the permanent collection of the Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design.
